Do you buy a Valentine’s gift for your man?

February 7, 2011

A lot of Valentine’s Day gift recommendations (including ours!) focus on gifts for women, but Valentine’s Day is supposed to be about couples, not just one half of the couple, no?

If you are buying something for a male type person, I like this elegant silver corkscrew and wine stopper set. It comes in a gift box and, along with a bottle or two of good wine, should make for a top evening.

But I’m intrigued… do you buy a Valentine’s gift for your man? And if not, why not? Tell us in the comments.

Secret Santa gift ideas

December 6, 2010

The Secret Santa seems to be an office staple these days. No longer working in an office, I manage to avoid it, but my husband’s been asking me for Secret Santa tips and so I’ve picked out a few gifts, all costing under £10.

Metal Heart Wine Charms setThis set of 6 metal heart wine charms comes in a gift box and costs just £6.50. Use these on the stem of your wine glasses to add a little sparkle, but on a more practical note so that your guests can easily distinguish their glass from someone elses.

Lisbeth Dahl manicure setFor £9.50, how about this Lisbeth Dahl Manicure Set? The hard case is covered with a gorgeous ‘antique silver’ glitter fabric and is lined with pink suedette, while the set includes scissors, clippers, nail file, tweezers, cuticle pusher and cuticle clippers. It costs £9.50.

Boxed Corkscrew And Wine Stopper SetIf you’re unlucky enough to have picked the person who has everything, you could do a lot worse than this Boxed Corkscrew And Wine Stopper Set. The gift box contains an elegant silver corkscrew and wine stopper and it costs £8.50. Bargain.

A photo album is a picture perfect present

December 1, 2010

Men are notoriously tricky to buy for at Christmas, I’ve found. You could go the way my aunty has in the past – turtle wax, a Road Atlas, denture glue (yes, really) or you could get them something simple but stylish.

If I’m ever struggling with a gift for anyone, I go for a photo album or frame with some photos already inserted. This small, plain leather album from Paper High has 30 pages of handmade Indian Khadda paper which are interleaved with protective tissue paper. Stick in some photos of the children or grandchildren and you’ve got a gift he’s sure to treasure.

A great gift for guys

November 1, 2010

I think I’ve mentioned before (once or twice…) that I’m not good at present shopping in general, but I am particularly bad at shopping for men. Unfortunately, my family is very male – I have many more men to buy for than women. Fortunately a few years ago I found something that worked and now I buy it for at least one of the men in my life every Christmas. It’s a toiletry bag.

But not just a toiletry bag, I fill it with toiletries (chosen obviously with the recipient in mind) and I may also add a few little extras, like a voucher or an iTunes card or some little joke present. In my experience, it’s a gift that always goes down well.

Fair trade stationery for that back-to-school feeling

September 6, 2010

This time of year always gives me that back-to-school feeling even though I haven’t gone back to school in September for *cough* 20+ years…

And when I think about this time of year, I want to buy stationery. I love these sari notebooks by Paper High. They come in various colours and sizes and they’re fair trade.

Also by Paper High – and also fair trade – are these stitched leather journals with 125 pages of handmade paper. That’s enough to last you to the end of the school year. Whether you go to school or not!

8 great last minute ideas for gifts for Dads for Fathers Day

June 14, 2010

If you have yet to get anything for your Dad, remember that Father’s Day is this Sunday. We’ve got lots of ideas for gifts for men here at Hampton Blue, but you need to order today!

Here’s a quick list of 8 great last minute ideas for gifts for Dads of all sorts including a few that you can come up with on Fathers Day itself:

One day before:

  • a bottle of wine
  • a plant for the garden for green fingered Dads
  • a box of chocolates – it’s not just Mums who have a sweet tooth

Very last minute:

  • a home made card
  • a subscription to his favourite magazine – go online to order and print off the details!
  • a handmade voucher offering your services to mow the lawn, put out the rubbish or take over any other of Dad’s hated chores
  • an experience voucher – ordered online. Just slip te details in with the hand made card
  • a cup of tea in bed, the Sunday paper and the chance for a lie in.

Combine some of these ideas and Dad will be so chuffed he won’t realise that you have left everything to the last minute!
